Today I stole from a fellow musician

Today I spent almost two hours trying to find some way to purchase a song that was released ten years ago on a major label, on a single, on a remix album, on a separate second remix album and as a maxi-single. It was completely impossible.

I couldn’t find the song anywhere, and it totally blew my mind. Not Amazon MP3, not iTunes, not anywhere else. So then I went searching for the single. This I found two places, but both places only carried one track on the “CD” (the original single, and not the remix I was looking for), making it completely pointless.

I tried to find the complete remix CD, but even though it was listed on several stores, those stores only carried some of the tracks on that CD (and, of course, not the one I wanted).

So I tried to find somewhere that sold the physical CD, to order it the old fashioned way. Impossible, since the CD has been out of print for a decade. I tried to find the single, the remix album and the second remix album, but no luck there either — and I was willing to pay the extra bucks for the 9 songs I didn’t care about, just to get that one I really wanted to have.

I tried to search on eBay and I tried Amazon used CD sales, but no dice — the track (or any of the CDs) were nowhere to be found.

After having exhausted all legal options available to me, I tried a torrent-site. Found the track within seconds, and a minute later I was listening to it on my Mac.

Today I stole from a fellow musician, and I don’t feel bad about it.
